Darcy Shaw



Dr. Shaw is a professor of small animal internal medicine in the Dept. of Companion Animals, Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) , University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), Canada. Dr. Shaw graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and after two years in private practice returned there to complete a residency in small animal internal medicine and an MVSc degree.

He joined the faculty at UPEI after completing his residency and helped establish the Dept. of Companion Animals and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the newly constructed Atlantic Veterinary College. Darcy has served in several roles including Hospital Director, Department Chair and Associate Dean of Professional Services. He has spent considerable time in organized veterinary medicine and is a Past President (2000-2001) of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Darcy has received several teaching awards and helped establish the communication skills teaching program at the AVC.

He is a regular trainer in the annual Bayer Communication Project train-the-trainer program. From 2011 to 2013, Darcy participated in leadership development programs that included Leading Organizations to Health (Relationship Centered Healthcare) and Courage to Lead.

Over his career, Darcy has developed a deep appreciation for the dedication and passion of people within the veterinary community and the compelling need to support each other, communicate effectively and lead with integrity and authenticity.

Darcy’s personal passions include cooking, cats and travel.
